It is without doubt one of the defining questions of our time: how will we save species whereas bettering the lives of the world’s poorest? One organisation in Central Asia might have an answer.
The India-based Snow Leopard Belief has pioneered a mannequin of conservation that works with communities to guard the large cats in 12 nations, together with India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It has carried out, amongst different issues, insurance coverage programmes to compensate herders once they lose livestock to snow leopards – a transfer designed to cut back retaliatory killings.
The mannequin has been hailed a hit and this week its government director, Dr Charudutt Mishra, received a Whitley Award, which celebrates options to the biodiversity disaster. The £100,000 prize shall be used to export the mannequin overseas.
Different successful initiatives embrace initiatives to avoid wasting pink pandas, Sumatran rhinos and Brazil’s Araucaria forest. Danni Parks, director of the award, praised the winners for “addressing the interconnected crises of species extinction, local weather change and social inequality”.
