My spring break right here in Rome was held over Easter weekend, for apparent causes. Since Rome is a spot of pilgrimage for Catholics, it may well get fairly loopy over Easter. So, I made a decision to satisfy up with my associates Annika, Jack (each finding out in London with IES and CIEE respectively), and Grace (finding out with IES Dublin) in London for the weekend.
What a refreshing deep breath that was! All the weekend, we couldn’t assist ourselves from smiling and saying one thing like, “Are you able to consider we’re in London with all of our school associates proper now?!” It was actually, actually superb.
For starters, London is a cultural breeze in comparison with Rome. It felt like going to Australia the place the tradition actually isn’t all that totally different from the States. Plus, London has the most effective public transportation techniques on the earth… And it exhibits. No ready twenty minutes for an ATAC bus, no no! 5 minutes was the longest we waited for the tube. FIVE. Unimaginable, thanks London!
This weekend was punctuated by the form of dancing you solely do if you’re together with your finest associates––the freest form that makes you are feeling invincible. That, and quite a lot of junk meals. Sure, perhaps we did get Papa John’s delivered to Annika’s dorm. What of it? It felt, only for a second, like perhaps we had been again at good ol’ Hope School!
Fortunately, we didn’t want an excessive amount of of that. London saved us busy and entranced sufficient. We had excessive tea and felt oh so fancy with our tiny desserts and fancy plates. We stood with our ft touching the stage at The Globe and noticed Macbeth. We celebrated Annika’s twenty first birthday. It was greater than any of us may ask for.
Greater than that, what a privilege it was to see Annika in her metropolis, actually blossoming. She’s going to get A’s on her finals subsequent week and he or she rocked her internship. She actually made London her personal, and it was so lovely to see. That’s essentially the most particular factor folks overlook when visiting associates from their dwelling college overseas. It’s actually superb.
Should you and your folks need to go overseas, you actually need to avoid wasting as much as go and go to them of their respective international locations. It’s price each penny (even those I spent on a replica of A Streetcar Named Want that I purchased simply because I missed the play. No different purpose.) The Hope college students in Dublin go away for the States this weekend, and I’m actually unhappy I didn’t get to see Grace in her Dublin aspect now. It’s one thing I had no thought I used to be lacking out on.
Ethical of the story this week? I like my associates. I’m so, so grateful for them. We might’ve had an unimaginable time collectively anyplace on the earth, even cooped up in a Phelps dorm in Holland, Michigan. Nonetheless, I’m grateful we bought to do it in London, which is really one of many biggest cities on the earth.
